Students will be able to distinguish three verb forms: past simple, past perfect, past continuous.

Ability aims:

Through a series of practice, students will be able to choose correct verbs according to different situations.

Emotional aims:

Students will be more interested in English and be ready to help others. Teaching Key Points:

Distinguish three verb forms: past simple, past perfect, past continuous. Teaching Difficult Points:

Use the correct verb forms in different situations and similar situations. Teaching methods:

Communicative teaching method, task-based teaching method

Teaching Procedures:

Step 1: Warming up

1. Daily greeting.

2. Review the three verb forms

Ask students to remember past tense and ask several students to answer what we’ve learnt.

Past simple

Past perfect

Past continuous

Then do a match on the book text.

Step 2: Presentation

1. Read the sentences of exercise2.

Somehow he survived.

He was driving a lorry when he came off the road.

Before he volunteered to direct traffic, Timoteo had had lots of jobs. And write down which tense it belongs to

2. Answer the questions and conclude what the three tenses refer to. Then I will write down the conclusion on the blackboard.

Past simple ---actions in the past

Past perfect---something happened before something else

Past continuous---actions in progress when another thing happened

Step 3: Practice

Discuss in groups.

I will divide students into 3 groups. Ask them to find more examples of each tense in part3 of the passage The Human Traffic Signal. Each group finds each tense.

Then I will ask group leader to share their sentences and ask other students to evaluate whether it is right.

Step 4: Production

1. Do the exercise 4.complete the passage with the correct forms of the verbs. Then check answers.

2. Retell the passage of the reading part according to the key words and pay attention to the verb forms.

Step5: Summary and Homework

Summary: review the grammar points together and their differences.

Homework: Write down the correct verb forms of this unit verbs.
