Good afternoon, everyone. Today I’ll talk about Lesson18 Brandy Hates Cats. Please give me
some advice after listening.
I. Analysis of the teaching material(教材分析)
1. Status and functions (教材的地位和作用)
Lesson18 Brandy Hates Cats is the second lesson in Unit3 of Book4. This unit is about “amazing animals”. The topic is important in the topic of Nature in New Syllabus Design.This lesson is about a pet dog’s story. It is mainly Since it is a reading passage, it’s helpful to improve the Ss reading ability.
2. Teaching guideline(教学指导思想)
(Teaching syllabus: Language is for communication, develop their four skills, lay special emphasis on reading; Grellet put it well in his book developing reading skills: develop reading skill/ discourse analysis; get them to understand the western culture better; improve the ability to discover, analyze & solve the problems; Reading is for information, for fun; Use Top- down model or Bottom- up model to
activate Ss schemata; Interactive model)
3. Teaching important points
Reading and analysis the passage, improve reading skills; the vocabulary and expressions in this
lesson.
4. Teaching difficult points
To understand and use the grammar: the past continuous tense.
II. Teaching aims and demands
1.Knowledge objects
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to
(1)remember and learn to use the following words , phrases and sentence:
Chase, squirrel, branch, fierce, Brandy, Amy;
slow down, a dog named Brandy, take…for a walk, run after/behind;
That’s why we take Brandy for a walk.
(2) identify and be familiar with the tense they learn in this lesson( the past continuous tense).
2.Ability objects
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to
(1) understand the passage well
(2) retell the passage with the help of some key words
(3) learn some effective reading methods through reading practice
3.Emotion(moral) objects
(1) Arouse Ss’ interest in learning English.
(2) Love animals and nature.
III. Teaching methods
Reading method( pre-reading, while-reading, post-reading); Task-based method.
New Syllabus Design encourages teachers to use this teaching method. TBLT can stimulate Ss’ initiative in learning and develop their ability in language application. Make the Ss the real masters in
class while the teacher himself acts as the director and bring their ability into full play.
IV. Learning methods
1. Ss learn how to be successful language learners.
2. Ss understand how to develop the reading skill — skim & scan; how to communicate with others;
how to learn new words; how to learn independently;
3.The Ss form good learning habits.
V. Teaching aids (multi-media computer, software, OHP) 说教具
The teaching syllabus says that it’s necessary for teachers to use modern teaching facilities. It’s of great help to increase the class density and improve our teaching result. It can also make the Ss reach a better understanding of the text by making the classes lively and interesting. At the same time, it arouses
the Ss’ interest in learning English.
VI. Teaching procedure
I’ll finish the lesson in five steps.
Step1. Warming up.
Show some sayings by OHP: 1) Love me, love my dog. 2) Every dog has its day.
3) It doesn’t matter whether the cat is black of white as long as it catches mice.
4)It’s raining cats and dogs.
Let Ss guess the meanings of them.
Purpose of my designing: to arouse ss’ interest of this lesson, and lead to the topic of this lesson.
Step2 Presentation(Pre-reading)
Show the title “ Brandy hates cats” and the picture. Ask: 1)What is the passage about? 2)Who is Brandy? The boy or the dog?3) If a dog meets a cat, what will happen? Do you know why?
Ss talk about their ideas. And ask them to search for some information about the background of
the relationship between dogs and cats.
Purpose of my designing: Imagination can arouse the Ss’ interest of learning, I hope discussing can make Ss’ think about things connected with the real life and their own experience can help this
discussion.
Step3.Words learning(Pre-reading)
Play a guessing game.
1. An animal that looks like a dog. It’s fierce. (a wolf)
2. An animal that has a big tail. It lives in trees and likes to eat nuts.( a squirrel)
3. Where a stick comes from ( branch)
4. (Show the picture or video)The lion is chasing the deer. How fierce it is!
Purpose of my designing: Teaching new words in many different ways: guessing riddles, guessing the meaning of words and so on. The Ss can think actively in these kinds of activities. CAI can provide a
real situation with its sound and picture and it makes the relationships between the Ss better.
Step4.While-reading
1. Skimming
Ss read the passage quickly with the questions “ 1).What is the story about?”
2)What is the best title for the passage?
A. A lovely pet Brandy B. Brandy ate hamburger C. No supper for my family
Purpose of my designing: Let the Ss learn to read for main idea. Learning method instruction in this
step: pay attention to the head paragraph and the last paragraph for main ideas.
2. Scanning
Ss read and fill in the form.
Purpose of my designing: Let the Ss practice how to connect useful information in a passage. Pay
attention to the head sentences of each paragraph.
3.Careful reading. Look at the second paragraph: “ My dad…that night.” What information could we get from these sentences? Let the Ss guess. ( They may guess: 1. Brandy ate the hamburgers that night. 2. Brandy hid the hamburgers. 3. My mum and Dad are the hamburgers to Brandy. Etc.)
Step5 Post-reading
Task1 Find out the sentence with the main idea of each paragraph.
1. My family has a dog.
2. One time, Brandy ate some hamburgers.
3. pets need lots of love.
4. Brandy is not a fierce dog.
Task2 Discussion
1) What is Mike’s family’s opinion to animals?( Love animals, make friends with animals.)
2) Why does Brandy hate cats?( Because dogs are afraid of cats. Dogs can’t beat cats.)
Task3 Solve these problems
1) He wasn’t watching…, but Brandy was.(Translate)
2) I can’t remember what we had…that night.(Translate)
3) Stick the stamp on the envelope. A. 棍棒 B. 树枝 C. 粘贴(Guess the words’ meaning)
4) What feeling does a dog express when she puts up her tail?(Background knowledge) A.

Purpose of my designing: In this step, I want to let the Ss know about the language points and deep understanding of the text. Sum up main ideas ,translation and guessing the words’ meanings are difficult in reading, so I can instruct the methods of reading, improve the Ss’ reading ability through this
step.
Step6 Closing Let Ss read the text by themselves and find out any question they don’t’ understand. From this passage, we know the writer love dogs. Let’s protect the animal around us and love nature.
Purpose of my designing: Arouse Ss’ love about animals and nature to get emotion education.
VII. Homework
Try to retell the story with the help of the head sentences in each paragraph.
Find out some information or stories about dogs and cats.
