When anger, stress, or loneliness has its hold on you, you believe that at this very moment, you are miserable (不幸的). If you are able to go deeper, however, you may find that a lot of your pain isn’t actually coming from what exists at the present time. Instead, it’s a product of memories of the past and worries about the future.

When I was going through cancer, I didn’t know anyone, myself included, who was able to completely shut down the painful memories and worries about cancer. But I did discover a way that helped get me closer once in a while. One day, during an especially stressful period, my mind was racing with worry, fear about my upcoming surgery (手术), anxiety over losing my breast, etc. Suddenly, out of nowhere, an idea occurred to me: “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?”

I was shocked, but I just had to laugh. It was the theme song from SpongeBob SquarePants, a cartoon show I watched with my children. I grew up with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck and lovely kids’ cartoons. Those characters are silly, and completely stupid, and that’s why they’re funny. Somewhere in my brain, I knew I needed relief (解脱) from all of the stress I was under, and SpongeBob came to the rescue!

If mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present, what is more mindful than laughter? At that time, the laughter and the joy of being in the moment are all you care about. You’re like a child again, able to enjoy the moment without minding your reaction. Also, studies show that the simple act of laughing can increase endorphins (内啡肽), the feel-good brain chemicals, which help relieve (缓解) physical pain. You really do feel better after a laugh.

Whenever I am stuck in upset or worry, I look to laughing with friends or watching a funny movie. Laughing is a relief, separating me from worries for the moment. As Mark Twain once said, “The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.” 46. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Laughing your way to mindfulness B. Focusing on the present not the past C. An effective weapon for human beings D. Learning to be separated from worries 47. When we feel miserable, we tend to think that it results from A. the past events we remember B. the great worries about the future C. the present happenings D. anger, stress or loneliness 48. According to the passage, we can learn that the author . A. behaved bravely in face of cancer B. was calm before surgery C. felt relaxed from SpongeBob D. often watched cartoon films

Happy birthday! Do birthdays really make people happy? Of course they do. Birthdays celebrate the day we were born. Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggests another year of growth and maturity(成熟)---or so we hope. We all like to imagine that we’re getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the miracle of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process. But growing old? That’s a different story.

Growing old is not exactly pleasant for people in youth-oriented American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “You’re as young as you feel.” Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least “young at heart”.

Many older Americans find the “golden years” to be anything but golden. Economically, “senior citizens” often struggle just to get by. Retirement at age 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income. Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition, medical care and housing. Some even experience age discrimination(歧视). In 1987, American sociologist Pat Moore dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was often treated rudely---even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.

Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living together. Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged “baby borners” are rapidly entering the groups of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles(皱纹)are “. Marketing experts are already noticing this group of consumers.

49. We can infer from the second paragraph that . A. young people lack experience and wisdom

B. American older people often joke about their old age C. American culture is very young

D. different countries have different opinions on the old age 50. The main idea of the third paragraph is .

2

A. the golden years can make the old earn lots of money and receive good medical care

B. the old people in America are leading a hard life without good nutrition, medical care or housing C. the old in America have to retire at the age of 65 D. American social security benefits are not good

51. From the last paragraph we know that the underlined word “in” can be replaced by . A. serious B. bad C. disappearing slowly D. growing fast 52. What should be mentioned in the following paragraph? A. The public will change their attitude towards old people.

B. People will provide more services to the old in their communities C. The government will pass laws to ensure the benefits of the old D. Companies will soon produce more goods for old Americans 四、任务型阅读

Dogs are considered as man’s best friends. Why? It is because they are wise enough to understand their masters. For example, they can sense their masters’ sadness. Isn’t it strange? Every time you are upset or not feeling happy, your dog just knows. A study says that dogs know to come near to people who seem sad and depressed (沮丧的). It does not matter if the person is their owner or a person who they do not know. They can sense sadness and are attracted by troubled souls.

They understand when their owners do not pay attention to them. If you reward or play with other pets more often, your dog might notice and feel unsafe. A recent report published says that dogs become depressed if you reward or play with other pets more often. Because they can not say what they feel, they tend to act in a rude way.

They also can feel fear. Let’s say you are faced with your worst fear. What would you do? Would you get scared and run away, or face it? Before making a choice, remember that you would be setting an example to your pet. Research shows that dogs often copy their masters’ responses (反应) in extreme situations. In other words, if you are afraid of something and choose to be back away, chances are that your pet is going to do the same thing.

Dogs can understand anger as well. Your pet will often give you that naughty (淘气的) face if you are happy to train it. Dogs can tell when you are angry and will be quiet to obey you, and even try to cool you down.

They are watching you. We are all raised as respectable individuals who are taught to respect old people, obey the law, and help those who are in need from time to time. However, not all of us take these three things seriously. But if you have a dog at home, it is time to be serious about them. Research from the University of Milan said that dogs once observed two actors — one who was sharing his meal with a beggar, and the other who was driving the beggar away. It was found that dogs were willing to go to the generous man. So just be careful around your pet and it may judge you by how you behave before
