When I watch the movie 'One Day', I think this is a romantic and impressive movie. The hero is too handsome to be described by words and the heroine is such an admirable woman who is quite independent and clinging. The story is beautiful and warm, but frustrating at the same time. Only after I read the original, I realized that the book is much realistic than I thought. Love is not the theme actually. The grown-up and struggle between these two guys who have the totally different background and characteristics but are attracted by each other is the most inspiring element.
'Dexter is only a fine man when Emma is around.' That was the only thought after I watched the movie. He is free and famous when he is young, doing things without considering the results, and those are totally reflected in the book since once he face the lonely room by himself, he will be so nervous that need someone to be here and accompany him. And most of the time this one is Emma. She means a lot to Dexter, also nothing, since he didn't know what does he need and when will he need it, and Emma really fills the emptiness in Dexter's heart after they graduate. How ironic.
When Dexter and Emma go to their friend's wedding in the movie, Emma is extremely cool and comfortable for her 'being single' state. It seems the growth of her sentiment that broke up with Ian since the only reason she be with him is to get herself rid of being alone. So I was completely surprised when I read Emma has an affair with the married senior. At this time, Emma becomes an entirely normal person from the shining goddess-like image shaped by the movie. During those years, she has been upheld and compromised, and done something doesn't know whether it was right herself, and she still let herself in a complicated relationship after Ian. How realistic.
Some people would like to call Emma as 'spare tire', I didn't believe that at the beginning since I thought only be with Emma, Dexter can live his life down-to-earth. This kind of meaning makes me feel that the existence of Emma is just the salvation for him. But after reading the book, I changed my idea. When Dexter gets divorced and comes to Emma to express his feeling for her, she finds that she still can't reject this no longer confident and charming man although she has already met someone. No matter it proves that how important Emma is finally, the girl at this time is still the one who is on the losing side, the one who can never say no to Dexter, the one who is totally attracted by Dexter, in other word, a spare tire. Even though she's better than the original, she's still a spare one. This truth is not romantic at all. It reflects ours in the real life that we always know it's not fair to continue but we just not let it go.
The book deals with the accident of Emma extremely good. There's not any sign and describes this unexplainable accident as the aspect of Emma who is riding her bike, and choose a different path for her whim. She has no idea when and how did she crash the car and how to get injured and fall on the ground, just wondering why she's lying on the ground and her bicycle is disappeared and everyone keeps asking her how does she feel. And all of a sudden, all the description stops at Emma's last thought, and life just cut down so abruptly.
Another my favorite spot is that after Emma died two years Dexter chooses to face all the trifles which Emma left. It's just feel like the ice which finally froze in the winter, and now is splitting
little by little. Something that almost is the reliance in the past is vanishing step by step now, and that is time and reality.
Even though you may both love each other you cannot be together naturally; even though you may be able to be together you cannot live to old happily; even though you may live together for a few years and love each other deeply you cannot make sure after one dead the other life will also stops. And that is the reality that you can never deny.
