My name is Pinglei Zhang, born on Sep.20th ,1985, I am married and my wife is pregnant, so I am gonna be a father in a short time, so I am very happy. Now, I am a Ph.D student in Dalian University of Technology, majoring in Optical Engineering. The research direction is ground settlement monitoring, which has been applied in lab and worked very well, the next year, maybe it can be performed on Chinese high-speed railway, I am so proud of it. Recently, there is a chance for me to get the government sponsorship to further study abroad, so I’ve been working on the preparation for it, I hope I can make it finally.

I have never been abroad yet . so this chance to be abroad for further study as a visitor is very precious to me. But in china, I have been some of cities, for example, Beijing, shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu, shenyang. Different cities have different culture, Beijing, shanghai are too big and not suitable f or me, Chongqing and Chengdu are both beautiful cities, many flowers blooming in the whole year . But what I like most is still my hometown huludao, it is a small coastal city, in summer, walking along the beach, enjoying the sunshine is so comfortable, in winter, snow flying in the sky, all the things are white in your eyes, What a amazing life. Moreover, I lived here more than 20years with so many memories. And in this July, another important time of mine is coming, my first baby will be born here, so I love my hometown very much.

What ’s the biggest challenge in USA? Or What’s the challenges do you think?
I believe there will be two challenges for me, one is the homesickness, especially my baby, I am gonna miss him so much, but I will keep communicating with him by video on internet to feel his growing up everyday. The other one is to fit in the new environment. Firstly, I have no relatives or friends in this country. Secondly, English is a kind of foreign language to me, then it will be not convenient when I go to America for the first time. so I need to make new friends here as soon as possible and make effective communication with them, but it won’t take too long, because I am very optimistic and I have been practicing English everyday recently. Lastly, I cannot get accustomed to eating western food every day, but I can cook on my own, even some times I can go to Chinese restaurant with new friends, so it won’t be a problem.

I believe will go to the grand canyon，you know that, the population of china is 1.3 billion, so no matter where you go, what the most you see is human being. So if I have the chance to been the United States I what to see the true nature. And on the internet, I have seen some pictures about the Grand Canyon, it is so amazing. Moreover, the Grand Canyon is very near to Tucson. So it may be the first place I will go. Of course, New York is a good choice too.

Secondly, University of Arizona is one of the top 3 international optics research centers, as a student in Optics field, it is a perfect place for me to enhance my research skills and broaden my horizon. I love my major very much. Maybe you have not realized, but, in fact, the optical engineering has changed the world. For example we can connect the internet anywhere, it makes our life more comfortable. But without optical engineering there will not be the optical fiber net, information cannot be transmit so fast. Additionally, in industry control, optical sensor can be used everywhere, which can measure temperature, pressure, length, deformation, and so on. And in our life, such as the research we have done, it will tell you that whether your house, a bridge or other building is in danger, I believe someday this technology will save many lives and properties. So what I have done is significant. I love it.
My major is very popular in china. For the widely industry application, when we graduate, most of ours can get a job with a good salary. Moreover, my major belongs to a high-tech field, most of the
companies are major industries, so, the jobs are usually stable with a huge development space.

Of course, there are many effects. I can give you some examples to explain it, firstly, Thanks to the development of material science, we can get much new material with a low price. So we can make optical fiber cheaper and more effective. Then，we have the optical fiber net. As you know that at the beginning the optical fiber is more expensive than gold . In addition , thank to the computer miniaturization, we can make our signal analyzer smaller and more stable to make the sensor system used in industry. And in many papers, we know that with the help of modern processing technology, many sensors were made. If without modern processing technology, they are just theory. Of course, the development of optical engineering also improves the other science. So it has lots of good benefits on my major. Base on optical engineering, you can get new measuring instrument with better accuracy and new communication tools. Besides the mutual promotion, we can also know that now days the cross of the different subjects is very common. Many new subjects were born. Such as optical biology, optical chemistry, medical optics. Different subjects connect more closely.

No, I am sorry that my wife is here, as there are only two rooms in my house, my parents are sleeping in the other room, more importantly, my wife is pregnant , so she has to take a rest here, however, this interviewed will not be disturbed by her, so thanks for your understanding.
