01 Track002

My first name’s Susan, but the only person who calls me Susan is my dad. Oh, and my sister when she’s angry with me, but fortunately that does’t happen very often now.

Most of my friends call me Sue, and so do the people I work with. My old friends call me Maggsie. Because my surname is Maggs, and I was called Maggsie at school. I hated it.

Of course, there is only one person who calls me mum. And that is my son, but when he’s with his friends he calls me Sue.

My mum calls me Sweetheart, and my best friend calls me Suzanne because she’s French. My Japanese sister-in-law calls me Suki, apparently, Suki means loved one in Japanese, so that’s rally nice.

My husband calls me Bunny, but that’s another story.

06 track 007

Dave Carter ’s my best friend. We met when we were five years old because our parents were friends and we went to the same school. He works in a different city now. So I only see him at weekends and during the holidays. He is important to me because he knows me so well. We have a really good laugh together and we enjoy the same things- football, clubbing, girls, the usual stuff. When I feeling down or when I need to talk to somebody, I can always call him.

Recently I had girlfriend problems and he was great - he’s a really good listener. He just let you speak and he listens. But he isn’t perfect. He’s always late for everything and he never says sorry. Never! The last time I saw him was last weekend. We arranged to meet at half past six. I was nearly dark. Oh, well nobody is perfect, are they? He’s still a really good mate.

Track 008

A: Do you like your city?

B:Oh yes, I feel lucky to be living in a city. That’s so big and exciting. I love looking out of my apartment window over the high-rise buildings.

A: What’s the city centre like?

B: Some people say it’s too noisy and crowed, but I love that.. There’s aways something to see and do. We also have the most famous beach in the world- Capacabana Beach. Then , on the other side of the city, there are beautiful mountains. The highest one is called Corcovado, and it has the famous statue of Christ。 If you look down at the city from there, the view is spectacular. A; What’s the weather like?

B : It ’s great most of the time. The only time I don’t like Rio much is in the summer. It’s too hot and humid.

Track 009

A: Do you like your city? Yes, it’s wonderful. I think my city has every thing.

B: What’s the architecture like?

A: It’s a mixture of old and new with plenty of shops for everybody. The castle is the most famous monument, and at night it looks amazing.

B: What’s the nightlife like?

A: It ’s the young city because of he university, so there are plenty of cheap restaurants and

interesting cafe and bars. It’s got a great nightlife.

B: And what are the people like?

A: Well, some people are a bit reserved, but in general they’re really friendly.

Track 010

A: Where do you live?

B: Well, I live in a small village with my parents. My grandparents live here, too and my aunts and uncles. In fact, I think I am related with about fifty percent of the people in my village. A: What’s your village like?

B :It ’s very pretty. The countryside is very beautiful, and the air is very lovely and clear. But it’s too quiet. I find it so dull and boring here-there aren’t any discos or cinemas.

A: What are the people like?

B: Oh, they are lovely, but there aren’t many young people. I want to go and live in the city. Soon.

Track 015

They do everything wrong here!

They eat far too much meat and they eat it at 11pm. Yesterday we went out to dinner at 11:30 and we had trouble getting a table! At 1pm we were still eating, and the restaurant is still half full! They smoke too many cigarettes. They drink lots of strong coffee and a lot of wine.

They spend too many hours in the sun and they certainly don’t get enough sleep. One Saturday night we went to a disco at 2am and were surprised to see that there were a few people on the dance floor. Then the DJ arrived at 3am and the party began!

There are far too many cars in the city, and there’s too much noise everywhere!

They do everything wrong here, but the quality of life is great, and people really know how to enjoy themselves. I don’t want to go home!

Track 019

A: And what was the weather like?

R : Oh , dear. I think it was raining. Yes, I remember now- it was definitely raining when I arrived at work.

R: yes, blue.

A: Finally, who spoke first and what did they say?

Track 021

A: Now, David, it’s your turn. When did you meet Rosie?

D: Oh, nearly three and a half years ago.

A; Finally, David, who spoke first and what did they say?

D: Ah, Rosie spoke first. She said, How are you feeling?” And I think I said “I feel terrible.”

Golfing genius

Tiger woods was born on 30th December 1975 in California, USA, of mixed heritage: he describes himself as a quarter black, a quarter Thai, a quarter Chinese, an eighth white and eighth American Indian. His father, Earl Woods, name him Tiger after a friend who saved his life in the Vietnam War.

He was only nine months old when he started to play golf and he played his first game at one and a half years old. His father was his first teacher.

At the age of eight, he won a tournament and five more before he was 16. On 8 April 2001 Tiger Woods made golfing history. He became the first golfer to win all four majors --the most important tournaments-within the same year.

He is helping to make golf more popular with all ages and levels, and most people agree that he is probably the greatest golfer of all the time. Certainly, he is already one of the richest.

He now earns more than $50 million a year. He has a $100 million deal with Nike and also has deals with American Express, Buick, Rolex, and Wheaties.

What advice would he give prospective parents of golf champions? “Don ’t force your kids into sports. It has to be fun.”

The best advice he ever got? From his dad: “Always be yourself.”

Track 035

I : And here on Radio Five Live we have a winner in this week’s big competition. The prize this week is a trip to beautiful Augusta for the Masters and the chance to meet Tiger Woods. The winner is Pauline Perkins, and she’s on the line right now. Pauline.

P: Oh, yes. I think he’s the most wonderful person in the world and I know absolutely everything about him. I have a website all about him. And I write to him every day.

I: Really? What do you like most about him?

P: He ’s the greatest golfer of all time and he ’s the youngest player to win four major golf tournaments in one year.

I: Really? How old is he?

P: He was born on 30th December 1975 and I always have a party on the 30th December and I put pictures of Tiger all round the house.

I: Oh, how nice. Pauline, I hear Tiger sportsmen on the planet. Does he live like a typical superstar ?

P: No, he’s different from other superstars. He’s the only real superstar. He’s just so, ooh, different. I: What do you mean?

P: He likes staying at home, playing computer games and table tennis. Oh, and eating his favorite food. He’s a perfect man. He’s so good.

I: What’s his favorite food?

P: Pizza or cheeseburger and strawberry milkshake. I like the same things.

I: And is it true that Micheal Jordan is one of his best friends?

P: Oh, yes. Micheal Jordan is like a big brother to Tiger.

I: I see. And can I just ask you one last question?

P: Sure.

I: What are you going to say to Tiger when you meet him?

P: I’m going to tell him that I...
