’s work to ask, “ How much do lawyers make?” Angrily his father answered, “My clients pay me $300 an hour.” Tim said in surprise, “Wow! That’s a lot. Would you lend me $100?” “Of course not,” his father said. “Just let me work, please!”

Moments later, he heard his son sobbing(啜泣)in another room, so he called him back. “Son, I’m sorry! If you really need some money, of course I’ll lend it to you, but can I ask why you need it?”

Tim said, “Well, I’ve saved $200 , and if you lend me a hundred, I’ll have enough.” “Enough for what?”

“I want to buy an hour of your time so that you can come to our banquet on Friday and see me get the most valuable player award. Will you come?”

In the United States, both men and women usually smile and shake hands when they meet. Good friends and family members may embrace, especially after they have been away from each other for a long time. In casual situations, people may wave hands instead of shaking hands, and they may also greet strangers on the street by saying “hello” or “good morning”. Among young people, various hand slapping gestures, such as the “high five”, are common. When greeted with “how are you”, Americans “fine, thanks”. And any further answer to the question is not expected unless they are close to each other.

Americans do not usually stand very close to each other when talking, keeping about an arm’s length away. However, they may touch one another on the arm or shoulder during the conversation. It is common for couples to hold hands or show affection in public.

Visiting friends and families plays a big part in social life in the United States. And people usually travel long distances to do so. People are expected to be on time even when invited to someone’s house. However, if a guest is late, the hosts will feel OK if they have been told of the delay in advance. Guests are expected to feel at home, sit where they like and enjoy themselves during the visit. Gifts are not necessary when visiting, but many guests usually bring flowers or wine when invited. As for close friends, they may offer, or be asked, to bring some food for the meal.

53. This text mainly tells us about ______ in the United States. A. how to greet others B. making friends C. some social customs

A millionaire took some of his friends yachting(乘快艇). They passed a deserted island, where a man with a long beard and tattered(破的) cloths stood, waving his arms and screaming in their direction.

“Who is that?” asked one friend.

“I don’t know,” said the host, “but every time we sail by, he goes crazy.”

That may be an exception(例外) to a universal rule, which is that most people are happy to help if they can. But there is another universal principle, which is, unless you are stranded(被困)on a deserted island, you are probably reluctant to ask for help, especially from a stranger.

I recently learned that the word “mayday” has nothing to do with the month of May. Instead, it comes from the French word “m’aidez”, which means “help me”. But it is used only as a last resort. The plane is nose-diving. The ship is fatally wounded. “Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!” a voice screams over the radio. If help doesn’t arrive quickly, all will be lost.

We laugh at the opinion that men are famously bad about asking for directions. But, in truth, most people do not easily ask for help that they need. They wait until they are hopelessly lost ,or a simple job has become a nightmare(可怕的经历) before they seek help.

And it is also true that help is not usually too hard to get. But we have to ask for it.

Entrepreneur Brian Tracy put it will, “ Ask for what you want. Ask for help but never be afraid to ask.” Or like one man is fond of saying, “You don’t always get what you ask for, but you never get what you don’t ask for.” Do you need help? It may be easier to get than you think. Just ask for it. 57. The man on the deserted island waved his arms in order to ______. A. greet them in his own way B. show his sadness to them C. ask for help from them

D. tell them that he was happy 58. In our reality, many people don’t easily ask for help mainly because _______. A. they are unwilling to do so B. they are afraid of being refused C. they are often made fun of by others

D. they often have nightmares of seeking it

59. The author suggests in the last paragraph that ______. A. we should ask for help at any time B. we can always receive what we ask for

C. we shouldn’t hesitate(犹豫,迟疑) to ask for what we want when necessary D. it is not too hard for us to get what we don’t want 60. What is the best title for this passage? A. The benefit of seeking help B. Help is really good for you C. Important help in our life

D. Just ask for help from others

E
